Securing his first victory in the series, and indeed his first ever Cyclo-Cross victory, Jiri Klekner (Wheelspin Cycles) took round six of the Yorkshire Points Series staged at Huddersfield New College. The 28-year-old Huddersfield based rider crossed the line almost a minute clear of his nearest rival. Second spot went to Benny Pygott (Paul Milnes-Bradford Olympic) who was 47 seconds down, while third was Simon Maudsley (Dirtwheels Cycles), another 23 seconds off the pace. All three had been at the front of the race early on, alongside junior Tom Seaman (Nutcracker), but it wasn’t long before Klekner hit the front and gradually pulled clear, leaving Pygott and Maudsley to fight it out for second. Pygott eventually came out on top after a gruelling battle.

The New College, Huddersfield, venue had seen some significant changes, with the famous “grassy knoll” having given way to a new sports hall. However, the college had replaced it with three new grass mounds, swiftly christened Ingleborough, Pen-y-Ghent and Whernside by the organiser, Andy Whitworth. These mounds were the focus of a re-worked top half to the course, with a mixture of tight corners, cambers and run ups which were well received by the riders. Recent rains had made the going sticky, but despite being one of the most exposed courses on the circuit, the day passed off with only a brief shower and temperatures were more typical of late summer than autumn and big fields, amounting to more than 260 riders, enjoyed an excellent day’s sport.

Returning to the racing, Pedalsport CC siblings Chris and Mike Young secured a one-two in the veterans’ race, whilst their team-mate Chris Taylor took third to give Pedalsport CC a clean sweep of the podium. It proved to be a good day for the Horrocks family, with Mark Horrocks (Hope Factory Racing) winning the veterans over-50s race, while wife Juliet (Hope Factory Racing) was first woman (her first win in the sport, just a year after taking it up) and daughter Lucy Horrocks (Hope Factory Racing) was the first female rider in the youth race.

Mark took victory in the over-50s from Pete Wilkin (Fietsen Tempo) while Wayne Nicholson (York Cycleworks) was third. Behind Juliet in the women’s race were Norton Wheelers’ Hannah Saville and Ruby Pilling (Wakefield Tri Club) third.

In the youth race, Alfie Moses (Paul Milnes-Bradford Olympic) won from Robert Scott (Pedalsport CC). Euan Cameron (East Bradford CC) was best Under-14, whilst, as noted above, Lucy Horrocks (Hope) was best girl.

The under-12 race saw Ava Oxley’s unbeaten run come to an end as Henry Hollyman took the race to her. The pair the collided with Ava being held up as a result, leaving Henry to go on and claim the win. Oxley was second. The Under-10 event saw Luca Longo and Holly Deavin taking the win and the under-8 victors were Oliver Hick (who won a tremendous battle with William Huddleston) and Alice Feetham.

The series now moves on to a new venue, The Girl Guides Outdoor Activity Centre, Whitely Woods, Common Lane, Sheffield S11 7TG, next Sunday. Please note, this venue has changed since originally announced, so check the details carefully – full details of all YCCA events are on the 2013-14 Calendar

National Championships
The National Cyclo-Cross Championships come to Peel Park in Bradford 7-8 January 2017. We've launched a new website to help riders, spectators and sponsors alike including the all-important link to online entry. And following Shrewsbury's#dirtyweekend inspiration last January, we'll be using the helpful and informative hashtag #yorkshirelegover to help promote our event. The website is at http://www.cxchamps.co.uk
