Former British under-23 mountain bike and Cyclo-Cross champion David Fletcher cruised to victory in the first round of the 2013-14 Yorkshire Points Cyclo-Cross series hosted by the 3RT club in Tong near Bradford. Crossing the line two minutes ahead of Orange Monkey team mate Billy Harding, Fletcher was in a class of his own over a tough course that offered little respite as it took riders over heavily grassed fields, up dusty farm roads and through a tight and technical wooded section.

Earlier in the day, Alfie Moses opened proceedings with a confident win in the Youth race, finishing over a minute clear of Jo Peatfield. Lucy Horrocks was the first female rider home in 12th place. In the non series under-12 races there were wins for Toby Kershaw and Holly Deavin (Under-10), Imogen Peatfield and Milo Hull (Under-8) and Louis Cook and Amber Hull (Under-12).

The day wrapped up with a quality Senior and Junior race in which the pace was electric from the very first lap with five riders, led by Dave Fletcher, Ian Taylor and Billy Harding, getting away and opening up a 17 second lead. Fletcher didn’t let up the furious pace and soon was in the lead on his own – he kept increasing the gap with each lap that passed and by the end of the race he had lapped everyone up to eighth.

Ian Taylor (Jedi Cycle Sport) had already ridden in and won the veteran’s race but was showing little sign of fatigue. He managed to keep Fletcher in sight for much of the race but eventually tired and fell away to fight for second place with Harding. Their battle came down to the wire, with the final run down to the finish over two dismount boards settling it as Taylor decided to dismount to negotiate them whilst Harding stayed on his bike. This allowed the local man, Harding, to get the advantage over the veteran.

In the Veterans’ race, Taylor won with apparent ease. After a strong summer season which saw him win the local evening ‘Cross series, not to mention success on the national MTB circuit, Taylor had too much speed for his rivals.

From the start, Taylor and team mate Noel Clough got away, opening up a 20 second lead in the process. But halfway through the race, Clough’s chain came off and this somewhat derailed his challenge as he faded to sixth. Chris Young (Pedalsport Cycling Club) worked his way through to take second and in third it was Andrew Peace (Jedi Cycle Sport). Mark Horrocks was the first Vet 50 finisher, whilst Marie Jackson was the first female competitor home.
