Fancy Dress Charity Cyclo-Cross

A fine turn-out of 75 riders visited the lofty field on the edge of Heptonstall village, close to Hebden Bridge, which is the venue for Yorkshire Cyclo-Cross Association’s annual Fancy Dress Cyclo-Cross.
The Under-12 race got things underway with a spectacular array of costumed riders streaming off the start. The rough, bumpy Heptonstall field was whipped by strong winds and made the going hard for all the competitors. However, Nathan Page was able to bring some magic to his riding, thanks to a stunning green wizard’s outfit, and the East Bradford CC rider held off the dynamic scuba diver Olivia Ingham and icily cool snow-woman Amber Hull to claim the win.
The over-12 race was dominated by a fast-moving front group including Eddie “Spiderman” Townend and Brian “Xmas Pudding” Perks. However, in the end it was Huw Oliver, not in fancy dress, but applying the self-handicap of riding a mountain bike, who won. He powered clear of Spiderman in the later laps to claim the win. Having just lost out to Mr Incredible the year before, Oliver was clearly not going to let another superhero deprive him this time round.
The event concluded with a pie and peas lunch, followed by a raffle in the local Bowls club. In truth the main emphasis of this event is always fund raising. This season the Yorkshire Cyclo-Cross Association has been raising funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Fancy Dress event took the total raised for this popular charity to over £500.
