Round seven of the 2014 Pedalsport Yorkshire Cyclo-Cross series took riders to the sunny Killinghall Moor Country Park on the edge of Harrogate.
The Harrogate Nova club had laid out a fast and sweeping course on the grassy fields and bankings of the venue and with temperatures in the twenties, the racing was inevitably fast.
The Under-14 race saw the now traditional battle for supremacy between the Pedalsport trio of Matt Taylor, Eddie Townend and Jenson Young. Euan Cameron, still not back to his best after injury stayed with them for much of the race, but in the end it was Townend claiming his first win since the opening round, with Taylor just holding off Young for second, with Cameron fourth. This series is going all the way to the line. The first girl home was the impressive under-12 Amber Hull.
The over-14 race went the way of Hope’s Jack Clarkson, who made up for his crash-fest at the previous round with a strong ride. Nick Barnes stayed with him for several laps but in the end had to concede to the Hope rider. Ian Taylor came through to claim second from Barnes in the closing stages, having earlier had to make an emergency bike change after his machine appeared to suffer from sticking brakes. Amira Mellor was the first woman home.
The women’s race also featured a brilliant scrap between Joanna Rycroft (CXM) and Sophie Thackray (Paul Milnes). They were together lap after lap and it came down to a sprint in which Joanna claimed 2nd spot ahead of Sophie.
We’ve received a nice message from Ted Sarmiento: “Cavendish style apologies from me to everyone in the 2nd and 3rd wave of the start at tonight’s race in Harrogate. Having helped set out the course I somewhat ironically forgot to avoid the first set of pegs and tape which brought me and a couple others down. I think I managed to help get one of the victims back in the race after freeing a wrapped chain. I hope everyone is OK.”
